This is a list of notable character relationships in the Dead or Alive series.
Ayane and Brad met during the events of the third tournament. He tries to get her to drink with him, only angering her (and Hayate, who was with her). They meet again during Dead or Alive 5, where he once again tries to flirt with her, only to be knocked down by Eliot for it.
Ayane and EliotEdit
At first, Ayane did not seem fond of Eliot, but he admired her fighting ability. The kunoichi was annoyed by the young boy's negative attitude and lack of self-confidence, only to give him a slap and a reprimand. However, much to her surprise, he thanked her for the advice and discipline.
In Dead or Alive 5, Eliot recognizes Ayane at the point Brad teases him and flirts with her. After blocking her slap (which was targeted at Brad) while simultaneously knocking Brad over, Eliot impressed her with his improvement and taking control of the situation. During this time, Ayane was far calmer and much less biting than their previous encounter. Despite sharing Hayate's lack of regard for the tournament, when Eliot asks her if she was participating, she gives a coy "We'll see..." as her response. Eliot was hoping to see Ayane in the tournament, but it is uncertain if they've met after that. She now seems to have some sort of respect for Eliot as a fighter, as he admires her for her great fighting abilities.
Ayane and HayateEdit
Although Hayate and Ayane were unaware of being half-siblings for the first few years of their lives (as Ayane's heritage was kept secret), the connection between them is strong, even though Hayate doesn't care for Ayane as much as Kasumi. As children, Hayate was one of the few people who did not treat Ayane as a social pariah and does not see her as a "demon child". His kindness towards her, combined with the man's skill, resolve, and strength in the clan, led Ayane to admire Hayate greatly as she calls him "Master Hayate", an admiration that may have turned into love. Her love for Hayate was so extreme that she was ready to attempt suicide when she thought he didn't love her anymore.
The exact feelings between the half-siblings are a matter of debate; Ayane's respect for Hayate is obvious, and the friendship, familial bond the two share is definitely apparent. He is also shown to be protective of her, as shown when he fought Brad for trying to make a pass at her.
Regardless of their exact relationship, the two remain at each other's side, looking out for and protecting one another as partners-in-arms. Throughout the series, once Hayate gained his memory back after Dead or Alive 2, they have been on many missions together: killing Genra in Dead or Alive 3, destroying DOATEC in Dead or Alive 4, and fighting MIST and the False Kasumi in Dead or Alive 5.
In Tag Battle, they have been considered primary partners since Dead or Alive 3, sharing two tag team animations, calling for each other when tagging, and have opening and winning sequences.
Their relationship is complicated. Hitomi possibly holds Ayane at a higher esteem, acknowledging their martial arts skills are equal and that Ayane is Hayate's younger sister. The complication lies more in Ayane's perception, but Ayane is warming up to Hitomi due to Hayate's fondness of her.
While working on the Freedom Survivor as a waitress, she reunites with Hayate and meets Ayane. When Hitomi asks her if she's Kasumi, the kunoichi is angered by Hitomi's mistaking her for a sibling whom she is in "bad blood" with and fights Hitomi. After the fight, Ayane is surprised that Hitomi's karate is equal to her ninjutsu. In Dead or Alive 5, Ayane recognizes her in the wild. Hitomi claims to be practicing, but Ayane ponders and then chastises her choice of clothing for training before the two fight.
In Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, they have gained a complicated unity. They now share an opening and winning sequence in their tag battles based on their meeting during the story. Their interactions clearly point out Ayane's denial in accepting Hitomi as her fighting equal, but nonetheless, they co-operate in battle. Hitomi, in spite of her honesty, seems to appear victim to Ayane's cynical attitude: in their opening sequence, Hitomi asks if she is training for the tournament, to which Ayane remarks "Don't make me laugh", although this does not faze Hitomi in the least. In the winning sequence, Hitomi bows and thanks her for the fight, at which Ayane remarks that she has to fight better than that, which doesn't seem to faze Hitomi either. Ayane's remark is possibly based on Hitomi becoming runner up in the tournament and some denial in accepting her as equal in fighting ability.
Ayane and KasumiEdit
Ayane and Kasumi are half-sisters and cousins; sharing the same biological mother, Ayame, with Ayane's father, Raidou, also being Kasumi's paternal uncle. Ayame was raped by Raidou, thus conceiving Ayane. As children they were close friends and, despite the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan's negative views of Ayane, they enjoyed playing together, even sharing the same hairstyle. Due to her age, she never realized why the other villagers treated her so badly. However, after learning the circumstances of her birth, Ayane became intensely bitter and jealous of Kasumi because Ayane was treated like the "demon child" of the village while Kasumi was treated like a princess and had years receiving all of Hayate's affection. Ayane was not aware that Kasumi, like herself, had also been kept in the dark about Ayane's origins and had no idea that her purple-haired playmate was indeed her half-sister until it was too late. When Kasumi ran away to avenge Hayate, Ayane was finally able to express her now deep hatred toward Kasumi when she was sent to kill her for leaving the village. Subsequently, she also tried to keep Kasumi away from Hayate as much as possible to add to Kasumi's pain of having to be separated from her beloved brother.
It seems the hatred was one-sided from Ayane, In Dead or Alive: Dimensions, when Ayane attacks Raidou and is easily knocked down, Kasumi rushes to her aid and helps her up, though Ayane seemed hardly affected by this. Also, Kasumi was never intentionally mean or cruel to Ayane, and only fought her when it was absolutely necessary; in some games, before fighting Ayane, Kasumi may ask, "Why?", questioning the reasons for their battle.
However, over time, her envy and hatred of Kasumi slowly abated since their circumstances have changed. Due to the events of Dead or Alive 3 and Genra's passing, Ayane became the new Hajinmon Master of the Mugen Tenshin clan, respected and feared alike, and Kasumi was the runaway shinobi - the outcast of the village. Ayame had also come to terms with her by then in attempt to heal her emotionally scarred daughter. During the fourth tournament, Ayane merely delayed Kasumi enough for Hayate to get a head start on their plan to take down DOATEC, rather than killing her. This fading animosity may have also been why she stopped Kasumi from entering the burning DOATEC building to try and save Helena. In Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, Kasumi and Ayane seem to have started to develop a more friendly relationship with each other.
In Dead or Alive 5, when Ayane and Hayate are about to fight Alpha-152, Ayane stops Kasumi from joining the battle by throwing a kunai at her feet. Kasumi quietly grants Ayane's silent request to fight alongside Hayate and the improvement of their relationship is greatly evident. Ayane may have known that Kasumi would not able to finish the battle by her own hand if she was to join at that particular time, as Hayate, Ayane, and Ryu Hayabusa seem to have weakened Alpha by the time the building had began to burn.
At the end of the ordeal, In Dead or Alive 5, Kasumi and Ayane are finally at peace, as both sisters smile at each other instead of killing one another. Kasumi returns Ayane's kunai with a word of thanks. In tag team matches, they also have a more cooperative relationship, and there no longer seems to be anymore tension between them, as seen in their entrance, and victory pose together.
Ayane and HayabusaEdit
Ayane and Hayabusa have worked together on many occasions; five if counting the Tengu affair in the second Dead or Alive tournament, the Omega affair, and the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan’s attack on DOATEC. Since the Dark Dragon Blade incident in the Ninja Gaiden series, the two seemed to have formed a friendly working relationship, with each recognizing the other’s skills and capabilities. She regards Hayabusa with respect and has formed a working relationship with the Dragon Ninja.
Mila is a huge Bass Armstrong fan ever since she was a child. Though she hasn't met Bass yet, she met Bass' daughter Tina. She hopes to meet him once, and possibly will through Tina.
It seems that Rig and Bass work together on the same oil platform located offshore. Although they seem to get into fights - mostly due to Bass' quick temper & Rig's playful humor - they also appear to get along very well. During the story, the oil platform catches fire which Rig and Bass work together to escort other workers to safety and prevent the fire. They share a full alliance that shares two tag team-ups in tag battle.
Bass and TinaEdit
Bass and Tina are father and daughter, and Bass is really protective towards her, still viewing her as his little girl. Like most fathers, Bass dislikes her using her sex appeal. He doesn't hesitate to meddle in her affairs, but only out of love and tries to keep an eye on her at all times. This causes friction in their relationship, as Tina sees herself as her own person and wants to make her own choices. Their disagreements often lead to real fights in the ring and Tina more or less wins every time. Although they hardly ever get along, the two can be close at times.
During the events of Dead or Alive 2, Bass guards her from men like Zack, and he disagrees with her dreams of being something big in the entertainment world, as she wanted to become a model. He believes that it isn't a good career for a young lady. During the events of Dead or Alive 3, Bass attempt to prevent his daughter from becoming a Hollywood actress in a movie. During the events of Dead or Alive 4, Tina has set her sights on a new goal; to become a rock star. Once more, her father detest the idea and sets out to stop her.
During the events of Dead or Alive 5, Tina returns to fight in Dead or Alive tournament, much to her father's dismay knowing she is up to something. Bass defeats his daughter, but in her announcement, she has declared that she is going to run for government. Bass is overly upset, but is forced to hide it from of thousands of fans which would expose him as an overly protective father. He is forced to accept the idea in front of fans viewing worldwide.
Bass and ZackEdit
Zack and Bass have formed a kind of rivalry since Zack’s "courtship" of Tina; Bass is highly protective of his daughter, mostly because he didn't want his daughter to be taken away from him by another man in her life, and saw Zack as a threat to Tina's love for him, although Tina was obviously not interested in Zack. It's unknown if Zack is still with Niki by the time of Dead or Alive 5, but Zack and Bass are on more friendly terms since Zack is now modest and reserved with Tina, and he even has a friendly fight with him.
Christie and Bayman are both assassins, once both working for Victor Donovan. To begin with, they maintained a professional relationship, despite some friction between them, but things became bad between them when Donovan betrayed Bayman by trying to get him killed. Bayman does not care for Christie, seeing her as a lesser assassin and even describing her as "one of Donovan's lap dogs", which she did not take to heart. The rest of their relationship is based around their own relationships with Donovan; as Christie still works for Donovan, Bayman sees the woman as an enemy. It is hinted that the both of them may express slight enmity to each other. Nevertheless, they share a full tag alliance in tag battle and have an established working relationship together.
Bayman and DonovanEdit
There is plenty of bad blood between Bayman and Donovan. Once united between a professional relationship, after Bayman carried out Fame's assassination under Donovan's word, he was left without payment and Donovan betrays bayman by sending other assassins to silence him. Donovan did this because he did not want to leave any proof that he had any part in Fame Douglas' death. As a result, Bayman hates Donovan and would love nothing more than to kill him in return, hungry for revenge. He feels nothing but hostility for him and has tried his best to take Donovan down while trying to avoid being killed in return. Most of Bayman's actions in the series have been fuelled by his sense of anger he has towards Donovan.
Bayman and HayateEdit
In Dead or Alive 5, Bayman seems to have a slight respect for Hayate, possibly due to him being a shinobi. This has shown during their fight, as Bayman was curious to see what Hayate was capable of. During the attack on MIST, Bayman helps Ayane and Hayate to break into the lab. It may be possible that both also respect each other due to their martial art.
Bayman and Helena DouglasEdit
At first, Bayman and Helena did not go well with each other; however, by the time of Dead or Alive 5, he and Helena became closer, like a bodyguard and client relationship. Helena and Bayman show no hostility toward each other and both share a strong bond of loyalty. Both Helena and Bayman are enemies of Donovan, and because of this, Helena hired Bayman to track down Donovan and bring him to justice. They managed to maintain a close but professional relationship between themselves. However, it's unknown if Helena is aware that Bayman is the one who killed her father.
Bayman and Leon's rivalries are hinted at through banter at the beginning and end of matches between them. However, their history and feelings between them has never been explained. When they meet in Dead or Alive 3, Leon expressing disbelief that Bayman is still alive, implying that he might have tried to kill him before or maybe had witnessed, or heard of an event which led Leon to believe that Bayman had died. Bayman also encourages him to return to the desert, implying that Leon is a military deserter.
While no specific relation is stated, Leon is closely associated with Bayman, largely due to their similar body types, and the fact that they both use similar forms of martial arts to fight.
Bayman and ZackEdit
Bayman and Zack have a complicated relationship. In the events of Dead or Alive 5, Bayman even gave a blunt remark that Zack "creeps him out." Despite this angering Zack, he accepted that he was not to convince Bayman otherwise nor to convince him to see Helena (which was the objective).
Brad and EliotEdit
Brad and Eliot seem to get along with one another, sharing common ground in the cases of their masters. Brad talks to Eliot before their battle in Dead or Alive 4, trying to help him understand Gen Fu's trust in him. Eliot even talks to the man about his doubt of his skill and Gen Fu's reasons for choosing him as an apprentice, showing that Eliot trusts Brad to a certain extent, since he talks to him about such a personal subject.
In Dead or Alive 5, besides their friendship and alliance, Brad is traveling along with Eliot on his journey, most likely causing comedical moments by annoying Eilot to a degree even when Brad was "hitting on" Ayane. However, Eliot still lets it pass as far as even letting Brad live with him, but it is unknown why Brad went on the journey.
Brad and Gen FuEdit
Brad and Gen Fu met in the third tournament. Brad had heard about the master possessing the "Iron Fist" through word-of-mouth stories, although Gen Fu asures him that his power is not fairytales. In Dead or Alive 4, Brad tells Eliot that he should pity Gen Fu because he has been "lonely" all his life. Brad possibly has respect for the old master. When swapping between Gen Fu and Brad as tag partners in Dead or Alive 5, Brad will usually call out 'Gramps'. This could refer to Brad joking around with Gen Fu, or just forgetting the old master's name.
Despite the thirteen-year difference between them, Brad seems to take a liking to Kokoro when he first sees her, suggesting that the two of them share a drink under the trees. Kokoro, however, refuses him straight and rejects him instantly, with the two engaging in combat. They share a secondary team alliance with Brad leading their team-up which features a teamup posing as Brad drinking sake to Kokoro's geisha dance performance on top of struggling opponent.
Christie and DonovanEdit
The nature of Donovan's relationship with Christie is not entirely known. It can be assumed that he hired her because of her skill as an assassin. He also seems to trust her a great deal, as she often acts as his right hand. She helped him plot some of his plans against the Mugen Tenshin clan, and at times she acted as his bodyguard. During the events of Dead or Alive 3, Christie was hired by Donovan on a couple of occasions to keep an eye on and attempt to kill Helena.
It is heavily hinted that Christie does not really care for Donovan; when she confronted Bayman during the fourth tournament, she told the other assassin that he could have Donovan, showing that she doesn't really care if the man dies or not, and she also calls Donovan a 'pompous ass'.
Christie and EliotEdit
Eliot finds Christie generally attractive. In Dead or Alive 4, he expresses regret that he would have to fight a "beautiful lady." She laughs menacingly, but she says to him "I like you kid...".
In Dead or Alive 5, he becomes embarrassed when she compliments him. He asks her if she is participating in the tournament, presumably in an attempt to impress her.
Christie teases Eliot and often makes remarks on him being young and inexperienced, but in Dead or Alive 5 she has acknowledged that he has "grown."
Christie and HelenaEdit
Helena and Christie are enemies. However, this does not mean they can't work with each other. In fact, it's shown that they are default tag partners, both having unique and quite damaging tag throws.
Christie was hired by Donovan on a couple of occasions to keep an eye on and attempt to kill Helena. Christie was also the one responsible for the death of Maria, Helena’s mother. Keeping this fact a secret from the other woman, Christie acted as a servant to Helena during the course of the third tournament, during which they had a stable, professional relationship. However, soon after Christie revealed herself as an assassin sent to kill Helena, resulting in the disintegration of the pair’s positive relations.
During the fourth tournament, she has observed Helena more. Christie seems to have developed a morbid fascination with her target, that even she finds difficult to understand. She nonetheless plans to carry out her orders, but is indignant of anyone else raising a hand to Helena, as that privilege is to be left to her alone. Christie revealed her responsibility for Maria’s death to her, making Helena hate her even more.
In Dead or Alive 5, it is revealed they are slightly more into friendlier terms, most likely to keep a professional reputation due to DOATEC's new rising, but Helena still watches Christie since she is Donovan's "Pet Assassin."
Christie and RigEdit
Although it is unclear right now, Rig may have known Christie previously. In Dead or Alive 5, she remarks on how much he has grown, hinting that she may have known him when he was younger. Christie approaches Rig while he is busy at work which he forcefully shooed her away deeming the danger of the work environment. However, Rig doesn't seem to have any memory of meeting her before and, when Rig points this out, Christie neither confirms nor denies ever meeting him. Even though their relationship is still not defined officially, it appears later on that they have a close, work-related relationship, both working under Donovan's orders. As seen in the final moments of Dead or Alive 5, they both fight against Kasumi in order to prevent her from destroying Alpha-152.
Donovan and HelenaEdit
Because Helena was the legitimate heir to the leadership of DOATEC, Donovan sees her as a threat to his power. He sends Christie to pose as a servant and befriend Helena in order to keep an eye on her. Eventually, he decides to have Christie kill her. Though she tries to kill Helena in both the third and fourth tournaments, Christie failed due to Bayman's interference.
Donovan and Lisa HamiltonEdit
It is unknown what relationship Donovan and Lisa share with each other, but Lisa reveals animosity during the events of Dead or Alive 4 about Hayate's capture and Project Epsilon when Helena confronted her in the burning of the tri-towers. She has worked for Donovan in the past, but was possibly betrayed by him somehow.
Donovan and RigEdit
Donovan and Rig are hinted to be father and son. Not much is shown about their relationship but it's possible that Rig may have only recently found out about their relationship during the fifth tournament. Together, they apparently plotted out everything that happened in Dead or Alive 5.
Eliot and Gen FuEdit
Gen Fu and Eliot have a Master/Apprentice relationship; Eliot has a great deal of respect for his master and always wanted to prove himself worthy to him. Gen Fu may also accept him somewhat as family as he trust Eliot around his granddaughter, Mei Lin, whom refers to him as "big brother". In Dead or Alive 5, even though Eliot doesn't succeed in winning the tournament, Gen Fu has shown a great deal of trust to his student offering to teach Eliot the last form of their martial art: Xinyi Liuhe Quan.
In the Dead or Alive 4 tournament, Leifang and Eliot become acquainted due to their youth and determination in studying Kung Fu. Eliot clearly has respect and admiration for Leifang as he will call "Leifang!" when tagging in during team battle. It is unknown if Leifang realizes that he admires her. They share a secondary tag alliance since Dead or Alive 4, sharing one team-up which Eliot initiates, but ends in Leifang signature Back-ram attack. Leifang seems to be a bit oblivious to Eliot's attention as she does not have a personal call once tagging him in.
Eliot and HitomiEdit
Hitomi and Eliot met each other in the 5th Dead Or Alive Tournament, although Eliot's comment saying, "It's been a while", suggests they met before in the previous tournament. They met up in the circus under construction, while traveling with Brad. Leifang says they were looking for a practice match, and Hitomi teasingly roars at an embarrassed Eliot, telling him not to go easy on them just because they're girls. He nervously says he wouldn't, with an amused Brad smiling as they spar in a tag match. Hitomi could've been flirting with Eliot, or simply just playing around with him, given her bubbly nature. During the 5th tournament, the two face each other, with Hitomi coming out as the victor.
Gen Fu and HelenaEdit
They were partners in Dead or Alive 2 and worked together. Gen Fu asked Helena why she joined the second tournament and instead of replying to the question, Helena said it was none of his business. However, Helena seems to like Gen Fu; even offering to pay for his granddaughter, Mei Lin's operation. They have a full tag alliance and share two tag team-ups together. However, their intros and outros were removed in Dead or Alive 5, though they still have the tag throws.
Hayabusa and HayateEdit
It is unclear exactly when the two met but Hayate and Hayabusa are good friends, sharing close relations that the two clans had with one another and are as close as brothers. Hayabusa is very protective of his friends so he watches over Hayate too. In Dead or Alive 3, Hayabusa decides to destroy Genra to keep Hayate safe. Hayabusa and Hayate also share similar techniques, probably due to them practicing together as kids. This is evidenced from during the third tournament, as seen through Dead or Alive: Dimensions, when Hayate and Hayabusa simultaneously executed a master shinobi rank Ninpo on each other.
Before his abduction by DOATEC, Hayate request that Hayabusa promise to watch over his younger sister Kasumi, hence why he is always by her side; thusly when Kasumi was to appear in the Dead or Alive tournaments, he agreed to participate as well. In the original Dead or Alive and Dead or Alive 2, Hayabusa is the first person Hayate (under the name of Ein) was able to remember after suffering amnesia. He advises him to find Kasumi and fight her in order to get his memory fully restored.
Hayabusa and Jann LeeEdit
Though Hayabusa has befriended several people from the Dead or Alive tournaments, Jann Lee is notable since the Tengu incident onwards due to their gradual recognition and respect for each other’s abilities as masters of their chosen arts. It could be the fact that Jann Lee wants to face strong opponents like Hayabusa. Jann Lee first encountered Hayabusa in the second tournament, when Hayabusa warned him as he was a civilian about the dangers of the tournament. By the events of Dead or Alive 4, they have formed something of a friendly rivalry. Jann Lee demonstrated his mastery in double nunchakus. He threw them to Hayabusa in which he showed complimentary mastery. The two engage in a friendly spar with him in the fourth tournament.
They have been a full tag team alliance since Dead or Alive 2. One tag consists of Hayabusa leading by launching the opponent into the air, then lifting Jann Lee into a sky-high flying side-kick. The second is where Jann Lee is leading the duo, with twin kicks to the opponent's head, propelling them into the surrounding environment.
Hayabusa and KasumiEdit
Hayabusa is good friends with Kasumi, just like how he is with Hayate. Hayabusa promised Hayate that he would protect Kasumi at all costs during Hayate’s absence and recovery. Even though she broke the Mugen Tenshin laws and became a runaway shinobi, Hayabusa still kept his promise and still watches over Kasumi, as he is one of her only shinobi allies not burdened by the shinobi laws. Her strong-willed nature does prove to make this difficult at times, however, such as when she entered the first Dead or Alive tournament, forcing Hayabusa to also enter if he was to continue keeping an eye on her. He tries to stop her in the first Dead or Alive and Dead or Alive 2, but fails. He doesn't see her in Dead or Alive 3 due to her departure against his wishes, but in Dead or Alive 4, Hayabusa saves her from Helena's attempt to kill her. In Dead or Alive 5, it is presumed that Hayabusa is the one who has Muramasa watch over Kasumi to keep her safe before the battle against Alpha-152 in the MIST laboratory.
In Dead or Alive 2, they are one of the most compatible tag teams in the series. They have one tag each towards each other, one pre-animation sequence, and one win sequence. In Dead or Alive 5 tag battles, they maintain everything in the tag union, but now they call for each other when tagging.
In the 2006 live action movie DOA: Dead or Alive, it is implied that Kasumi may have romantic feelings for Hayabusa and the feelings seem to be mutual for Hayabusa though he is reluctant to show it (as it would be a forbidden relationship), which is a digression from what fans of the franchise know from the series.
Hayabusa and LisaEdit
Lisa and Hayabusa's relationship is that of one-sided irritation. When first they met Hayabusa posed as an onlooker on the DOATEC Yacht, the Freedom Survivor, looking for the captive Kasumi. After managing to get close to Lisa, who tried to flirt with him at the time, he stole her DOATEC ID while she showered, heading for Germany where Kasumi was being held. When Lisa held her at gun point, Hayabusa intervened and caused her to flee. Two years later he found that Lisa had been in contact with Donovan, continuing his inhuman science projects. Hayabusa was angered, as DOATEC's and by extension her own actions, lead to the Mugen Tenshin clan suffering immensely.
Hayabusa and MomijiEdit
Momiji is the last of the Hayabusa Ninja Clan's shrine maidens and Hayabusa's apprentice. After saving her from falling at hands of the Black Spider Ninja Clan, Hayabusa taught her how to fight, in order to survived herself as the last maiden of their clan. A prodigy in the Ninja Arts, Momiji has grown to be an exceptional kunoichi in her own right. Enamored with his convictions, Momiji shares Hayabusa's perceptions of virtue and justice, only resorting to deadly violence against her clan's enemies. She looks up to her master with pride as both a mentor and an undying ally, and Hayabusa is equally proud of his disciple and sister-in-arms, having her accompany him on missions.
Hayabusa and RachelEdit
Hayabusa and Rachel's relationship was initially complicated due to Rachel's coldness towards Hayabusa, while Hayabusa didn't like Rachel when she was testing him during the Dark Dragon Blade Incident in Ninja Gaiden. Despite their differences and ideals, the two have come to mutual terms, forming a working relationship as well as a close friendship, and slay the evil Fiends together whenever they meet, with Rachel slowly beginning to trust Hayabusa over time because of him rescuing her from enemy capture multiple times while she was on a crusade to slay her own twin sister, who had become evil due to the fiend blood in her veins. Her respect and admiration for Hayabusa can be seen in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate when she says he's like having the strength of a hundred others.
Hayate and HitomiEdit
Hitomi found Hayate in the Black Forest in Germany. After being used for Project Epsilon, he didn't remember anything so she brought him back to the dojo and named him "Ein". The two trained together since then. Years later Ein departed for the second Dead or Alive tournament, where he recovered from his amnesia. After this, Ein remembered who he was and left for the Mugen Tenshin clan.
Despite Hayate moving on with the clan, and hardly ever seeing her, Hitomi still had feelings for him; she is the only non-ninja person to have any type of relationship with him. During the third and fourth Dead or Alive tournaments, Hitomi tried to convince Hayate to go back to Germany with her, but he tells her he cannot return with her having to settle this pleading by challenging her to a fight.
Hayate trusts Hitomi so much to the point that he admits that he is a shinobi, which is an important secret to keep. Although she hates to let him go, Hitomi accepts this and allows him to continue his life as a ninja.
Despite all that happend in Dead or Alive 5, they both met again, Hitomi asked Hayate if she could fight with him in a friendly match, which Hayate accepted, after the fight Ayane appeared and Hayate had no choice but to continue his mission to destroy Alpha-152 and Donovan's new organization, MIST, Hayate bid farewell to Hitomi and she looked at him in hope that they will meet again in the future, which they most likely will.
Hayate and Jann LeeEdit
During the events of Dead or Alive 2, Ein is his rival and ace. Winning in tag battles, they will celebrate the victory together. During the events of the third tournament, as Hayate and Hitomi are about to have a friendly battle, Hitomi tries to rush to aid Leifang from Jann Lee's attack which sends her flying into the table but Leifang tells Hitomi to stay out of her affairs. Jann Lee ignores the girls seeing Hayate and asks him to fight with him as he sees that he is a worthy challenge and it is unknown what happened to the girls then.
Hayate and KasumiEdit
Hayate and Kasumi are brother and sister. Hayate was a very protective and understanding brother to Kasumi, so they had a close brother/sister relationship. After Hayate was injured by Raidou, Kasumi sought revenge on Raidou for what he did to her dear brother, seeking to restore his honor. They have a very strong bond, even as Hayate becomes the leader of the Mugen Tenshin clan and Kasumi becomes a runaway shinobi. Hayate will never harm Kasumi himself but he would not speak to her out of the shame he feels over Kasumi's abandonment. Still, no matter what, Hayate and Kasumi will always love each other and be loyal to each other.
In Dead or Alive 5, Kasumi and Hayate seem to be on better terms with each other, as they work together to stop Phase 4 of Donovan's Alpha plan. He is shown to know his younger sister well, as he caught on almost immediately in Dead or Alive 5 that the Kasumi seen in the beginning of the game was not the real Kasumi, but simply her clone.
They gain a long overdue tag union in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate and Last Round consisting of one tag with each leading, one pre-animated sequence, one winning sequence, and personally calling each other when tagging. Kasumi leads in an "Oboro-type" tag, whereas in the second tag where Hayate leads they perform ninja aerial techniques, lifting the opponent sky high before ending with Kasumi kicking them repeatedly to the ground.
Hayate and LisaEdit
Lisa had been involved with and led Project Epsilon. Hayate escaped in the catastrophe of the lab being destroyed and soon regained his memory. In Dead or Alive 4, Lisa flies in on Hayate. Hayate thanks her for making him come destroy DOATEC and giving him a purpose in life, in return for which he battles her and defeat her easily.
Helena and KokoroEdit
Helena and Kokoro are half-sisters, sharing the same biological father, Fame Douglas. Miyako, Kokoro's mother, left Fame and went back to Japan and raised her daughter there, whereas Helena was raised in France, living with her mother, Maria. While the two of them are half-sisters, Kokoro doesn't know who Helena is. On the other hand, Helena seems to know about Kokoro and Miyako (as she was old enough to remember).
In Kokoro's story mode in the fourth Dead or Alive tournament, she eventually finds and feels weird upon coming into contact with her. Helena replies, "Our blood... Can that what brought us here together." While preparing for battle, Helena shouts, "you must learn my techniques!" (This symbolizes the union of Ba Ji Quan and Pi Gua Quan, the "Sister styles" to united into one art.)
When Helena announces the Fifth Dead or Alive tournament, Kokoro recognizes her. The two once again meet at Taylor's Bar after Zack drops Kokoro off. When Kokoro meets her, she asks Helena about her father, telling the woman that she did not remember hers. Helena assures her that her father was a good man, "as Kokoro's was." It is unknown if Kokoro knows that Fame was definitely her biological father, but both she and Helena do not deny or affirm it. Helena shows much of kindness and love towards Kokoro and spars with her as well to see how strong she has gotten since the fourth DOA tournament.
The sister's feature a full tag alliance in Dead or Alive 5 uniting their styles. with the two calling by each other's names when switching between the two. They have an animation pose pre-fight which they do a complementary chop in fighting stance which Kokoro says, "Sorry, can't go easy on you." and they pose in a similar fighting stance.
Helena and KasumiEdit
Despite what DOATEC has done to Kasumi's life, she still shows friendly and caring feelings towards Helena and seems to understand the pain that Helena must be going through. However, these feelings are coldly dismissed by Helena when she tries to shoot Kasumi claiming that she has no use for her, only to quickly be stopped by Hayabusa; this is one of the few times that Kasumi has no mercy for Helena. Even after threatening to kill her, Kasumi attempts to stop Helena from committing suicide, which would have resulted in her death had Ayane not stopped her, showing that she still cares for Helena.
After the fourth tournament, she and Helena have been more friendly and have an understanding relationship with each other. In tag battle, they share a full alliance with two tag team-ups. They are two heroines determined to defeat Donovan.
Helena and LeifangEdit
Helena and Leifang were both born in wealthy families. Leifang was jealous when Helena announced she had entered the second tournament, saying that the tournament doesn't need another "spoiled little princess". However, she seems to be friendly with Helena. During the second tournament, they share a cut scene before their battle where Leifang is shown looking with curiosity and seemingly enviously towards Helena as she goes up in a glass elevator.
After their battle in either Dead or Alive 2 or Dead or Alive 3 tournaments, if Leifang wins, she will friendly hold out her hand in an elegant way and say, "Let's meet again for the next dance." If Helena wins, she will showcase her elegant Kung Fu and remark, "This is perfect harmony." In Tag Battle, Leifang and Helena have some of the most graceful tag team-up moves seen due to their fluid Kung Fu styles. In winning a Tag Battle, they will both hold out their hands in an elegant way.
In the Dead or Alive 5 Tag Battle, They maintain their tag alliance from the previous tournaments. Helena will call out for Leifang, but it is not reciprocated by Leifang when she tags for her.
Helena and LisaEdit
Due to the experiments led by DOATEC Lisa, scientist for DOATEC at the time, was ordered to stop Helena from finding out what they were doing. When she came close she threatened to kill her if she ever found out. During the Mugen Tenshin attacks, Helena blames Lisa for the DOATEC destruction and they battle at the Tritower Heliport. As of Dead or Alive 5, Helena still keeps a watchful eye on Lisa, who is now under MIST.
Helena and Marie RoseEdit
Marie Rose is Helena's loyal servant who respects her, referring to her formally as "my lady" when Marie Rose calls her.
Helena and MiyakoEdit
Helena seems to know Miyako as she mentioned her to Kokoro, telling her to ask her mother about who she was. It was stated that Helena knows Miyako through ties of DOATEC, as well as Miyako having the position of high ranks in DOATEC's Japan center. It is unknown if Helena promoted her or not, and it is unknown if Miyako knows of Donovan's plans.
Helena and ZackEdit
Zack saved Helena from her attempted self-sacrifice during the destruction of the DOATEC Tritower. Since then, they became business partners and Helena visited New Zack Island to discuss the possible resurrection of DOATEC. Zack appears to be under Helena's employment in Dead or Alive 5. A photo of Helena with hearts on it is also present in the helicopter Zack, implying that he may have a romantic interest with her.
Hitomi and Jann LeeEdit
In the third Dead or Alive tournament, Hitomi and Jann Lee meet early on, which they shared a certain mutual respect in martial arts resulting in a friendly rivalry. Another rival of Jann Lee for which he has returned respect, seeing as a worthy challenge. Upon meeting, the two agreed that real power comes from within one's self, showing how easily they get along despite their different martial arts. However, when Jann rescued Hitomi from being eaten by an enraged T-Rex in Dead or Alive 4, she didn't fully agree with how he went about doing it. They both met at the finals during the fifth Dead or Alive tournament in which Hitomi became runner-up and Jann Lee won.
Hitomi and LeifangEdit
Both being young, quirky, somewhat naïve and baring cheerful personalities, they can be playful with each other one minute, such as during their visits to Zack Island, and then become engaged in a heated battle next over something as trivial as a cabbage. Their relationship is somewhat of rivals and best friends. In Dead or Alive 3, she showed some animosity towards Hitomi, telling her to stay out of her affairs with Jann Lee despite Hitomi showing care for her, implying that they have a fierce rivalry. After Dead or Alive 3, Hitomi and Leifang became fast friends due to their keenness in martial arts and closeness in age.
In Dead of Alive 4, they have a fierce battle over cabbage, but they become closer after the tournament is over. Their vacation, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, shows how much closer they are becoming as Hitomi allows Leifang to hand feed her strawberries, Leifang allows Hitomi to take glamour shots of her, and the two girls sit together in a tree eating ice cream.
By the events of Dead or Alive 5, they have become close friends, as well as martial arts rivals. They train together and later spy on Jann Lee as he is initially rejecting Zack's tournament invitation. They have another battle for the sake of preparing for the tournament. After the battle is over, they wish each other good luck in their training and go their separate ways.
In Dead or Alive 5, they are made an official tag team partners due to new tag team up moves, call each others names when tagging the other, and winning tag team poses.
Jann Lee and LeifangEdit
Jann Lee is Leifang's primary rival, target, and obsession. Leifang was once saved by Jann Lee from a gang of thugs six years before the first tournament. Not wanting anyone to assume that she can't handle things on her own, Leifang entered the tournaments to defeat Jann Lee, where she aims to perfect her fighting skills so that she could prove herself to him, and become "a part of his world". She has thought of him so much through every bit of her training that it has brought to a point unexpected in her obsession for him.
In Dead or Alive 2, Leifang perfected her Kung-fu in order to defeat him and become "a part of his world" only to lose to him in which he replies to her, "This is not the place for you." indicating the hard life of fighting he has done and she does not have to fight. He defeats her once more in Dead or Alive 3. Regardless of how much Jann Lee beats her in the combat arena, Leifang still persistently tries to keep up with him.
However, it is unclear whether Leifang harbors anything more beyond her one-sided rivalry, as sometimes, it is implied that the two might have a secret longing for each other. It is unclear what Jann Lee’s feelings are exactly about this rivalry obsession. However, he doesn't seem to have made any major attempts to stop her from continuing in this pursuit (unless he thought that defeating her time and time again would be some kind of attempt in stopping her.)
In the events of Dead or Alive 4, when they meet for battle and the Tritowers begin to detonate, he tells her "What do you say, Should we die together." She tells him, "I'm not going to die." He replies to her willpower by clenching his fist and saying, "No, you're not." In this statement, it does indicate that he cares for her as he has a strong desire to protect her. This desire for her safety is also evidenced when he catches her when Alpha-152 proves to be too powerful. He shows anger towards the clone after it throws Leifang.
In the events of Dead or Alive 5, Leifang persistently follows Jann Lee, while secretly training with Hitomi to keep her skills sharp enough to beat him. At one point, she almost encounters him, which results in her pursuing him onto a train. A potentially embarrassing and somewhat familiar occurrence following a sudden acute movement of the train is averted quickly thanks to Jann Lee: An older man almost relies on Leifang's breasts to regain balance, but Jann steps in at the last minute (showing his commitment to protecting her). After another sharp movement of the train, Leifang falls on top of Jann lee, resulting in an awkward romantic moment.
Leifang's embarrassment may have caused her to lose her battle with Jann Lee in the fifth tournament finals. This may also imply she does have feelings for Jann Lee.
Jann Lee and LeonEdit
During Dead or Alive 3, they challenge each others strength. Jann Lee considers him a worthy challenge, while Leon compliments Jann Lee, commenting how tough Jann is for making it far along in the tournament, though Leon states afterwards that he, himself, is the strongest in the world. Both trying to prove their power through the DOA tournaments, they challenge each other to see who is the strongest. As a tag alliance, they share one team-up instigated by Jann Lee and finished by Leon.
Jann Lee and RigEdit
Jann Lee holds a grudge towards Rig. Jann Lee was kicking Brad out of Taylor's Bar while insulting him at the same time. Rig broke it up and Jann Lee challenged him since he looked like a "real fighter." They got into a match, which Rig emerged the winner, embarrassing Jann Lee for his loss. After Jann Lee won the fifth tournament, he disappeared before being crowned and went to the bar, thinking that he wouldn't be a true champion until he took Rig down, fighting to see who is the strongest. Ironically, Jann Lee and Rig have a tag team alliance, and fight quite efficiently as a team.
Jann Lee and ZackEdit
It is implied Zack was among-st his first rivals during the first Dead or Alive tournament in which he defeated. Jann Lee seems to show a lack of concern for Zack and thinks he does not take his training seriously. During the events of the second tournament, Jann Lee wins a victory over him saying, "You haven't progress at all!"
During the events of Dead or Alive 5, While training in a forest in South America, Jann Lee is approached by Zack, who gives him an invitation to Dead or Alive 5. Jann Lee accepts the invite, but he challenges Zack to fight. As implied, Zack loses to Jann Lee once more.
Kasumi and LisaEdit
Kasumi seems to know Lisa from around before the second tournament. When Kasumi was fighting Kasumi α, Lisa came into the lab during the fight, and demanded to know what was going on. To her horror, she found out Alpha told Kasumi that Hayate was around in the DOATEC facility. She attempted to silence an enraged Kasumi by putting her at gun-point, but Hayabusa came to her rescue abruptly. Lisa didn't like the outnumbered odds, forcing her to flee with Alpha in hand.
Two years later, during the fifth tournament, Kasumi infiltrated the MIST facility alongside Ayane and Hayabusa to rescue Hayate, after she learned that Donovan was trying to reactivate project Epsilon. Kasumi went in the room with Hayate already in the start up phase, and as she attempted to free him, a shocked Lisa came in, and wondered who was doing this. Kasumi, already fueled with negative feelings of Lisa, accused her, and demanded to know what was going on. Lisa denied knowledge, but she went into the control room in an attempt to stop it.
Hayabusa and Ayane came in shortly afterward, and as Lisa started the shut down process, a container opened around the room, exposing hundreds of created clones. Alpha-152 came out of hiding, prepared to fight, and Lisa pleaded for them to defeat it. Hayabusa and the clone, now morphed as Hayabusa, sent energy beams at each other, causing the area where Lisa was to collapse. It's currently unknown if she's dead or alive, or if Kasumi felt any remorse over it.
Kokoro and LisaEdit
In the Dead or Alive 5 story mode, it is revealed that Kokoro and Lisa know each other. When they bump into each other during a wild scramble in the city, Lisa easily recognizes Kokoro. Although Kokoro may know Lisa through Miyako working with her, it is unknown, however, if Kokoro is aware of Lisa's exact occupation. They share a secondary tag alliance where Kokoro leads the team-up and Lisa finishes it.
Kokoro and MiyakoEdit
Kokoro is Miyako's only child that she had with Fame Douglas. She raised Kokoro in Kyoto and as she grew older, trained her to become a geisha. Miyako is very protective of Kokoro, even to the point of not letting her go to the fourth tournament, fearing for her safety and possibly finding out the truth of who she was. Kokoro tells Lisa that Miyako never tells her of the work she is doing.
Leifang and TinaEdit
Stemming from a disagreement on the philosophy of martial power. Tina and Leifang have since become rivals of a sort, if not for any other reason than for their difference in opinions. Despite the rivalry, the two do seem to respect one another. Their tag team poses, team-ups and calling each other's name to back each other, however, show potential in the two resolving their differences and in fact having strengths the other doesn't have.
During the second tournament, before they battle, Tina shouts, "This is power, Leifang!" She lifts a boulder and throws it right at Leifang's feet. Leifang gives a look of determination and tells Tina, "You don't know anything about power." Leifang leans over the boulder and demolishes the boulder with a single palm. Tina, herself, is impressed by how much power Leifang truly yields and whistles long and lowly due to it. During Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 and Dead or Alive 5, it appears they are now friends and respect one another but still considered themselves as rivals.
Leon and ZackEdit
In Dead or Alive 2, Leon claims that he and Zack had connections with each other, although Zack says that he has never met him before and is confused by what he means. It is unknown if the men ever did meet before and Zack just forgot, if Zack is just denying it or if Leon confused Zack for someone else.
Lisa and TinaEdit
Tina has been friends with Lisa since their school days and their friendship has remained strong right into their adult lives. Tina and Lisa seem to have kept in touch to the point that Tina was the only girl, aside from Lisa, who knew that Zack’s "Dead or Alive Tournament Invite" was a hoax. In Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball and Xrteme 2, they are eager to be each others partners, have friendly scenes on Zack's Island, and naturally have many music notes of fondness for each other when conversating. Re-acquainted on Zack Island, Lisa decided to enter the fourth tournament to match her wrestling skills against Tina’s.
Although during Dead or Alive 4 they taunt each other in the ring - with Tina claiming that Lisa, at the time in her luchadora identity La Mariposa, was hiding the fact she is ugly under her mask, and Lisa calling her stupid - that was just an act for the audience, and they go on to become wrestling partners, resulting in the two teaming up to defeat a rival wrestling team.
In Dead or Alive 4, they share a tag alliance of three team-ups; Two instigated by Tina and one instigated by Lisa. In Dead or Alive 5, they maintain their tag alliance, but in addition, they add personal calls with Tina calling for either "Lisa" or "Mariposa" (depending on Lisa's wardrobe). They also have pre-fight and winning post-fight animations.
Mila and TinaEdit
Tina met Mila at Johnny's Diner, where Mila worked as a waitress. Tina instantly recognized her as a fighter due to the bandage above her left eye, while Mila recognizes Tina simply as "Bass Armstrong's daughter". Tina encouraged Mila to enter the fifth Dead or Alive tournament and helped her train via sparring. Mila happily accepts and the two train together at the gym, though Tina is slightly jealous that Mila is more of a fan of her father's. They even spar with Brad and Eliot in a tag battle after she beat Brad in a match. It is during this sparring match and Mila's fighting spirit inspired Tina to make her comeback into fighting to the ring and enter the fifth Dead or Alive tournament after her retirement. The two fought each other in a DWA match where Tina thanks Mila for inspiring her to fight again and they promise each other that they will meet again in the tournament finals.
Momiji and Rachel may seem to have a mutual respect for each other, and form a working partnership to help each other out on their journey.
Tina and ZackEdit
Since Dead or Alive 2, Zack had an attraction to Tina Armstrong in an absurd way and would often ask her out, but failed many times to make Tina fall in love with him because she never liked him in that way and refused to go out with him, taunting him about his outrageous appearance, which Tina did not like the look of at all.
After many rejections, Zack stopped chasing after Tina and moved on with Niki, though in Dead of Alive 5 it's unknown if Zack is still with Niki, presumably the two may have broken up. In Dead or Alive 5 the two cleary have a fondness and attraction with each other as Zack calls "Tina babe" in a more polite way while Tina calls him "hon". The two are also shown to tease with each other, though Tina got angry with him when he confused her with Sarah; if the two of them win a tag-team fight, Tina would high-five Zack, but as he does it back, she would jump to the side and let him fall onto the ground.
